Covered in Glory

Last week I posted about Upper Deck cards and a few people commented here and on Facebook about missing Upper Deck's contributions to the hobby. Today I decided to show a couple of cards from their "Choice" sets issued in the last 90s.

Card Number 33: Upper Deck Collector's Choice 1998, #6

The first 18 cards in the set were top active stars that season, in this "Cover Glory" set within the set. It's a striking design.

The back of the card has quite a large write up and a nod towards Tony's likely future status as a Hall of Famer.

Interesting collecting factoid: there are two versions of this card. The difference between them is the shape of the hologram in the bottom right corner. This is the 'home plate' shaped hologram. There is also a diamond shaped hologram.

Card Number 34: Upper Deck UD Choice 1999, #34[*]
Upper Deck Collector's Choice became UD Choice for 1999. Again 18 players were pictured for the Cover Glory treatment and given a bright yellow card.

The description of Tony as "A Hitting Artist" is offset slightly by pointing out he didn't win the 1998 batting title. No mention of the World Series he just played in, but again there's some predicting going on as the Upper Deck blurb writer anticipated him hitting his 3000th hit soon.

[* I think this is the first time I have aligned the card number I've assigned to a card with the same set number. It was a complete accident!]

Total: 34/394

  1. I know UD has played around with different holograms on the back... like the gold holograms (in certain factory sets) or different shapes used for their signed Heroes cards. I wonder what the story is behind the diamond shaped hologram used for the 1998 UD Collector's Choice cards.

    1. I don't know but I just noticed the 99 card doesn't have a hologram at all.
